Topic: Presentation by Professor David Thiel (GU); Info session on motors

Professor David Thiel (of Griffith University) will talk about the odour-sensing robot built at the Radio Science Laboratory. This wheeled robot uses some unique odour sensors to follow a camphor trail along the ground.

The information session on motors will be given by Mike Thomas and Owen Byrnes.

Topic: Presentation by Chris Chitty (Robotechnology); Info session on sensors

Chris Chitty (of Robotechnology) is the architect of the mechanical sheep that were used in the film "Babe". He will describe some of the work that goes into movie special effects robots.

The information session on sensors will be given by Michael Lucas and Cameron McNaught

Topic: Presentation by Dr Peter Sobey (ForBio Ltd); Mid-year report

Dr Sobey (of ForBio Ltd) will be presenting on robotic support of cloning plants. The robot they have developed will clone genetically superior plants, enabling whole fields of pine forest or agricultral crops to be planted.

The program and presentation for the end of year competition will be covered during this meeting, along with progress reports on the purchase of the Handyboards.

* 6th August, 7:30pm, Meeting at ACS House, 9 Railway Tce Milton
Topic: Presentation by Dr Peter Corke (CSIRO); Info session on Sumo robots

Dr Peter Corke (of CSIRO) will be speaking about the Australian Robot Association. The ASA is focussed on robots in industry, and Dr Corke will cover some of the trends in robotics in Australia and overseas.

The information session on Sumo robots will be given by Gorden Wyeth of UQ.

There will also be an update on the organisation of the end of year competition.
* 10th August, 1pm - 5pm, Soldering Workshop at ACS House, 9 Railway Tce Milton

Topic: Show and Tell, Preparation for competition

The Handyboards have arrived, and some of the members have been experimenting with them. There will be discussion on practical experience and problems relating to the boards and their use. There is still one Handyboard left if anyone is interested in purchasing it - contact Owen Bynes for details.

The competition rules will be finalised, and other preparations for the competition will be covered.

Dr Norbert Harle (of QUT) will be speaking about QUT activities and the application of vision systems to robotics.

There will also be discussion about preparations for the end of year competition.
